Hyssop Lore

Hyssop (Hyssopus officionalis) has a long history of use in cleansing and purification, both physical and spiritual. Its strong association with Jupiter makes it an excellent herb of protection. Hildegard of Bingen recommended cooking chicken in wine and hyssop as a remedy for melancholy, and while small amounts of hyssop can be used in cooking, the herb is mildly toxic and seldom used as a culinary herb today.

Hyssop today is far less known today than in ancient times, but it deserves greater notice. Its place in a magical herb collection as a potent herb of purification is invaluable.
